NEW BLOG: Child Care Center Vs. Family Child Care Home

There are several resources parents and families have readily available for their child. There are two different types of licensed child care in the state of Florida (most states as well), a child care center or family care home. To be licensed by the state, child care centers and family child care homes must pass a Florida State criminal background check, attend initial and ongoing training for child care, and work with a licensor to ensure that the center or home environment meets and maintains the State’s health and safety standards and/ or requirements. A description of the two types of licensed child care including the advantages and disadvantages of both types is discussed below:

Child Care Center

A child care center offers full or part-time child care in a group setting. Children are in groups with same age children which can be ultimately beneficial for their development. Centers provide materials and age-appropriate planned activities for children and usually involve parents with their child's development and learning.

Advantages
Dependable schedule; open daily year round (most); availability usually not affected by teacher illness or absence because of staff (substitutes- teacher assistants). There is usually a formal plan for involving and staying in touch with parents throughout the course of the year. This is a great opportunity for children to join up with children of their own age.

Disadvantages
On the contrary, the disadvantages of child care centers may include, but not be limited to not meeting the needs of parents with late, early, rotating, or part-time work schedules;Children attending a full-day center for only part of the day, or for less than a full week, may have more challenges creating friendships or fitting in when most other children attend full time; they may not have a sense of stability. Child care centers do not provide individualized attention as a nanny would.

Family Child Care Homes

Offers full or part-time child care in a person’s home or home of their own. There are children in mixed age groups within a home-like setting.

Advantages
Children must adjust to fewer adults during the day and have a chance to form a close bond with caregiver. May be more flexible than center-based care in terms of hours, part-time or non-standard work hours. Family child care homes may provide more individualized attention (if not exceeding caregiver-child ratio).

Disadvantages
Back-up care may be needed in those times where the nanny/ caregiver is ill or is on vacation. The availability for family child care homes may be subject to the caregiver’s health and changes in personal situations.

For most students, December and January are two months that bring at least two weeks to relax and recharge while classes are out of session. For families, this can be a perfect opportunity to reaffirm emotional connections that have a significant impact on children's success in school. Recognizing the very powerful link between high self-esteem, high aspirations and high achievement, parents should consider three points to help students develop a positive mindset when they return to school.

Helping your children set new goals. Children usually feel successful when they accomplish goals - particularly those that lead them to success in school. Work with your child to determine learning and achievement goals that are attainable with a reasonable amount of time and effort. Once these goals are set, determine what steps should be taken to reach them. Praise every earnest attempt, whether it's successful or not.

Encourage your children to express their feelings. Children must understand that even anger and fear are normal emotions felt by everyone from time to time. They should understand that acknowledging these feelings can often be the first step to overcoming them. If your daughter realizes that she didn't do well in school, encourage her to set a reasonable goal she can reach and praise her accordingly. Do not scold her for performing poorly, as many times children feel discouraged to improve. Always encourage your child to do better!

Use discipline as a building block for self-esteem. Disciplining our children should be a tool for helping them make wise decisions. You can utilize it best by establishing a limited number of clear and necessary rules. Too many rules can make a child feel powerless and untrustworthy. But rules that have a definitive connection to success - completing homework every night or putting in extra study time before a big test (for example) may lead your child to automatically feel better about his or her abilities to perform better.

Focus on your child's social life

Many parents become worried or nervous for their child's first day of school. For most of your child's school day, he will relate to and work with the other children, learning to collaborate on projects and share toys.
